Gustav Mahler – Symphony No 5 – Sakari Oramo – City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Warner 2004)
Review: His thoughtful and sometimes introspective interpretation allows each section of the orchestra to shine through, rather than become subsumed in the undifferentiated wall of sound that characterises some of the more overwrought performances (Bernstein’s Vienna recording springs to mind). For orchestral balance and elegance listen to the start of the second movement. For sheer excitement, the finale of the symphony has seldom been bettered.
